Dr Colin Endean is a dentist, an organic farmer and a permaculturist who lives and works in South Australia's Mid North region.
Colin came to South Australia 22 years ago as a young dental graduate from Sydney to work in the outback of SA with enthusiasm to make a difference and to learn from and with these first Australians, the Anangu Pitjantjatjara of remote SA. In over 25 years of dental practice he has spent nearly half of these years living and working in remote Australia. When not in the outback Colin lives in Burra and has worked for many years as a district and school dentist in the public sector. More recently his professional experience and interests have extended to working on a research project for Adelaide University in remote aboriginal communities of the NT.
Over many years Colin has been involved and connected with multiple community and environment groups and networks and he is a director of Permaculture International Limited.
Colin's passion and understanding of the environment is reflected in the certified organic farm on the edge of Burra he manages with his family. Informed by the permaculture principles of working with and not against nature, the farm integrates native tree revegetation with heritage native grassland and with the production of olives, pistachios and many other fruit varieties. Colin believes that by connecting with nature and natural systems we can remember our place in the world and build resilience into farming and land use patterns.
A year ago, after seeing "An Inconvenient Truth", Al Gore's call to arms on climate change, Colin became a Climate Messenger in South Australia, making presentations raising awareness about climate change in Adelaide and the Mid North.
The scientific evidence that human activities are causing climate change should be of concern to everyone, especially parents. As parents we seek to secure the best and balanced choices for our children to grow into adulthood with opportunity and hope. We don't want our children to inherit the devastation and impact of dangerous climate change in the decades ahead.
So much has happened with rising awareness and many new and profound scientific and economic reports in this year. The risk of not acting urgently and with purpose, focus and unity with other world nations on Climate Change is enormous. It is a risk that Colin believes we must empower our communities to overcome through local action supported by a considerable political focus and attention nationally and globally.
It is this necessary political focus and attention that has drawn Colin to join with the Climate Change Coalition as a candidate for the Senate in South Australia.
"I'm having a go at 'tilting for windmills' by joining the political fray for a place in the Senate from SA. The opportunity is to 'Vote 1 for Climate' and share our focus and determination to bring sensibility and urgency to this issues in the election 2007."
